Step by step

How it works

  1. 1Drop in a photo, a Reel cover or a video file. For a video, a slider appears so you can pick the frame where your text is on screen.
  2. 2Look at the six previews side by side: Reels, TikTok, Stories, feed, profile grid and square.
  3. 3Click any preview to enlarge it. Crop views list exactly how much is cut from each edge, and the grid view shows your post among eight placeholder posts.
  4. 4On Reels, TikTok and Stories, check that faces, titles and captions sit outside the red and amber bands. Move anything that does not.
  5. 5Turn on the universal safe box to see one area that works everywhere, and download the guide PNG to use as a layer in your editor.
  6. 6Download the 3:4 grid crop or the 4:5 feed crop if you want a pre-cropped file, then check the final result in the app as a private draft.
Why OTL

Why use Safe Zone & Grid Preview

Exact crop math for your own file

The percentage cut from each edge is calculated from your image size, so a 4:5 photo, a 9:16 cover and a square all show their real numbers.

Two margins where the sources disagree

Published safe-zone figures differ. You see a typical and a cautious margin together instead of one number presented as fact.

Built for the 3:4 profile grid

The grid view shows your post as one tile among eight placeholders, using the tall 3:4 shape Instagram profiles use now.

Works on video frames

Pick any moment of a clip with a slider and check the exact frame where your title or caption appears.

Guide PNGs for your editor

Download a transparent 1080 x 1920 overlay for Reels, TikTok, Stories or the universal safe area and use it as a layer while you design.

Nothing is uploaded

Images and video frames are processed on your device, so an unreleased Reel or product photo never leaves your browser.

Real-world use

Who uses Safe Zone & Grid Preview

Titles and captions on Reels and TikTok

Keep burned-in text clear of the caption block and the button column at the bottom and right.

Reel covers that survive the grid

A cover appears at 9:16 in the Reels tab but is cropped to 3:4 on your profile. Check that the title is still readable in both.

Photo posts in the new grid

See how a 4:5 or square photo is trimmed in a 3:4 tile and whether the trim cuts a face or a product.

Stories with text and stickers

Check that nothing important sits under the profile bar at the top or the reply bar at the bottom.

Cross-posting one video to Reels and TikTok

Use the universal safe box to build a single master that works on both apps, so you do not edit twice.

Sending drafts to a client or teammate

Export the crops and guides so the person approving a post sees what viewers will see.

Deep dive

About Safe Zone & Grid Preview

A post that looks right in your editor can look wrong once it is live. The same file is shown full screen on Reels and TikTok, with the app drawing a caption and a column of buttons over the bottom and right edges. It is cropped to 4:5 or left wider in the feed. It is center-cropped to a tall 3:4 tile on the profile grid, which changed from squares to 3:4 in early 2025. Text placed for one of those places often lands under a button or outside a crop in another. Checking each one by hand means posting, looking, deleting and trying again.

The crop views are calculated from the actual size of your file, not from a rule of thumb. Instagram and TikTok both center-crop by default, so the tool does the same and then reports the result in plain numbers. A 9:16 Reel cover loses 12.5% from the top and 12.5% from the bottom in the 3:4 grid. A 4:5 photo loses about 3.1% from each side, because a 3:4 tile is narrower than 4:5. A square photo loses 12.5% from each side. If your file has a different shape, the percentages change and the tool shows the new ones.

The safe-zone overlays come with an honest limit. Neither Instagram nor TikTok publishes one official chart of caption and button zones for ordinary posts. The numbers used here come from creator guides and from percentages reported from Meta's Reels ad guidance (14% top, 35% bottom, 6% sides) and TikTok's in-feed ad guidance. Those sources disagree. The bottom margin on Reels runs from 320 px in some guides to 672 px in the ad percentages. So the overlay has two tiers. Red marks the area the app usually covers. Amber marks the extra area it sometimes covers, depending on caption length, device and app version. If your text sits in clear space, you are fine under either reading.

The universal safe box does the planning for you. It is the overlap of the Reels margins, the TikTok margins, the 4:5 feed crop and the 3:4 grid tile on a 1080 x 1920 master. With typical margins it is about 895 x 1315 px. With cautious margins it is about 840 x 963 px. Download the transparent guide as a PNG and place it as the top layer in your video or design editor while you work, then remove it before you export.

Everything runs in your browser. Images are decoded and drawn on a canvas on your device. For a video, the tool captures the frame you pick from a local copy and never sends the file anywhere. YouTube Shorts is not covered yet, because there are no margin figures we could verify. The same 1080 x 1920 file works there, but check the zones in the app. The final test is always the app itself, so post a private draft on your own phone before you publish.

Pro tips

Pro tips

  • Design on a 1080 x 1920 canvas and keep text inside the universal safe box. It covers Reels, TikTok, the feed crop and the grid tile at once.
  • Use the cautious margins for anything that matters, such as a call to action or a price. Use the typical margins for decoration.
  • Faces matter as much as text. In a 3:4 grid tile a 9:16 cover loses 12.5% at the top and bottom, so keep heads and eyes near the middle.
  • For a video, pick the frame where your caption is on screen, not the first frame. Text often appears a second or two in.
  • Long captions push the app's text block higher. If you write long captions, treat the amber band as covered.
  • Apps change. Re-check with a private draft on your phone after any big app update.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a safe zone?

A safe zone is the part of a vertical video or image where text and faces stay visible. The edges, especially the bottom and right, are covered by the app's caption, buttons and profile bar.

Does Instagram crop 4:5 posts on the profile grid?

Yes. The profile grid uses 3:4 tiles, and a 4:5 post is wider than that, so about 3.1% is trimmed from each side. A 9:16 Reel cover loses 12.5% from the top and bottom instead.

What size should a Reel or TikTok be?

1080 x 1920 pixels at 9:16 is the standard master for Reels, TikTok and Stories.

Are these safe zones official?

No. Instagram and TikTok do not publish one official chart for ordinary posts. The margins come from creator guides and from percentages reported from Meta and TikTok ad guidance, which is why the tool shows a typical and a cautious tier.

Is the TikTok safe zone the same as the Reels one?

They are close but not identical. In the figures this tool uses, TikTok keeps about 120 px clear on the right and Reels about 65 to 84 px, and both need roughly 320 px or more clear at the bottom.

Does this cover YouTube Shorts?

Not yet. The same 1080 x 1920 file works on Shorts, but there are no margin figures we could verify, so check the zones in the app.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Images and video frames are processed in your browser and never sent to a server.

Stuck?

Troubleshooting

My video does not load, or the frame is black.

Your browser may not support that video's codec. Try an MP4 saved with H.264, or open the video in another browser. As a fallback, take a screenshot of the frame you want and upload that image instead.

The preview does not match what I see in the app.

The apps change their layout often, and caption length and device size move things around. Treat the red band as the likely area and the amber band as the cautious area, and check a private draft in the app before publishing.

Why does my 4:5 photo lose its sides in the grid?

A 3:4 tile is narrower than a 4:5 photo. Instagram scales the photo to fill the tile height and trims the left and right edges, about 3.1% from each side.

Why does the Reels preview show black bars?

Your file is not 9:16. Reels and TikTok show other shapes whole, with bars above and below or at the sides, so the preview does the same.
